Glowmatography. The exocharmic glow of chemiluminescent lightsticks captivates students of all ages. In the article by Kuntzleman, Comfort, and Baldwin, the chemistry behind lightsticks is used to teach the theory and practice of chromatography. In addition, dyes collected in the eluate during the chromatographic process are analyzed using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Lightstick chemistry is a useful introduction to topics such as chromatography, intermolecular forces, electronic absorption and emission spectroscopy, and catalysis. This activity can be used as a laboratory or demonstration and can be modified to suit the chemical education level and chemical discipline of the students.
